Allthefe kingdoms, properly fpeaking, belonged to the Mogul; bot his power was fo weak ened by the lait invafion of Kouli Khan, in 1738, that he has not been able to aliert his empire over this remote country; the tributary princes of which, and even the nabobs, who were originally governors ap pointed under their authority, have rendered them felves independent, and exert an abfolute dominion over their refpeétive territories, without acknowledg ing his fuperiority'either by tribute or homage. The princes, when they quarrel among themfelves, natu rally have recourfe to the ażifiance of fuch European powers as are fettled in or near their dominions; and in the fame manner the bait-india companies of the European powers which happen to be at war with each other never fail to interei't the nabobs in the difpute.
