This book includes nine tales of terror. It was written in 1923, fouryears before the last of the Sherlock Holmes books. Sir Arthur ConanDoyle is obviously at his best at mystery rather than terror. Thatsaid,Conan Doyle\\'s tales of terror are fascinating and reach outover the years rather better. Particularly appreciated is "The Horrorof the Heights", which is a terrific science-fiction/adventure/horrorstory. Other good stories in the Terror section were "TheNewCatacomb", a Poe-sequel tale of revenge, "The Case of Lady Sannox", which has a very fine twist, and "The Brazilian Cat", a grim talethat reminded me of some of Roald Dahl\\'s mordant stories. Some other reviewers have expressed preference for the Mystery stories over theTerror stories, but we found these to be just as satisfying as theMystery ones.
