This book provides a timely overview and reappraisal of international security in the 1990s. Written nearly a decade after the end of the Cold War, the book is one of the first major attempts to distinguish between what is unique and what is perennial in the current security setting. In the process, this volume brings together the expertise of an international cast of fifteen specialists. Following the editor's introduction, three contributors analyze the military implications of a new international order. The next four essays deal with various aspects of insecurity that transcend state boundaries. Three subsequent chapters focus on security issues which have endured as sources of international concern into the late 1990s. Also, three essays provide a regional perspective on security in Asia-Pacific. A final chapter reflects on the preceding essays and offers its own view on contemporary security. This wide-ranging but balanced discussion is an important contribution to the continuing debate on security in the post-Cold War era.
