The idea has generally been given that the working of the system was well nigh faultless, and that no evils had crept in to offset ever so slightly the benefits. But, while wishing that Germany had indeed solved the problem, many have had a suspicion that larger claims were made for the system than were warranted. That this suspicion was well-founded is now proven by the publication by Dr. Ferdinand Friedensburg, who recently retired from the post of President of the Senate of the Imperial Insurance Office, after a service of over twenty years, of an article bearing the title Die Praxis der deutschen Arbeiterversicherung ("The Practical Results of Workingmen's Insurance in Germany"), and who criticizes the system severely in certain respects. References to this article from The New York Times and The Spectator (London) are presented herewith. In offering these, it is not intended to take a position antagonistic to workmen's compensation for accidents. We are heartily in favor of workmen's compensation.
