This thesis presents an initial application of the EvolvingTransformation System (ETS) formalism to the structuralrepresentation of Russian fairy tales. This work was motivated bythe needs of information retrieval (IR) in general, butspecifically concentrates on proposing a new type of documentrepresentation. The new representation is based on the temporal orconstructive process of events that occur in the mind of thegeneric fairy tale listener/reader. Representing documents in thisway yields several advantages to using ETS over traditional IRtechniques, such as being able to retrieve partial information froma document (i.e. a single sentence or paragraph), fast searching bytraversing the multilevel hierarchial class structure generated bythe ETS intelligent process, and locating similar documents basedon structural similarity rather than key words. Moreover, the ETSformalism suggests an explanation for the mechanism behind plotanticipation by an experienced reader as well as various levels offairy tale conceptualization.
