The book tries to touch upon all causes of confrontations between mother and daughter in Amy Tan''s Joy Luck Club, such as the paradoxity of mother-tongue in the case of second generation immigrants, the incompatibility of the fable-like Chinese tradition and the fact-oriented American thinking, or the different appraisal of character traits. Just as Tan gradually brings together mother and daughter, we will explore the parallels in the lives of all characters. Finally, we will examine how the mothers turn to storytelling to recover their relationships to the their daughters, and to transmit the cultural heritage to the comming generations. In this analyses we not only get a deep insight into the confrontations of mother-daughter relationship, here we can explore Tan''s exiting cultural riddle, confronting American and Chinese ways. The book is especially useful for those interested in the artistic expression of bi-cultural identity, ways of cultural transmitting, generational differences and multicultural identity.
