Hippocrates did not invent medicine, but elevated it to the rank of art. Having fallen heir to a discipline which had been routinely practiced since the dawn of time, he delved into its practices and applications, just as Socrates had done in other realms with his fellow citizens. A single image of the one whom posterity baptised the “Father of medicine” is with us still: that of the physician who dreamed of saving people from sickness and death. In this work, readers are placed in direct contact with the very texts written by ancient physicians and the fundamental testimonies that clarify their meaning.Mame Sow Diouf is a full professor of Greek and Head of the Department of Ancient Languages and Civilisations at Université Cheikh Anta Diop, Dakar. Her work deals primarily with Hippocrates and his role in the history of medicine. She teaches the History of Medicine and Medical Terminology at the Faculties of Medicine. She is also conducting research on the encounter of civilizations and the sharing of knowledge and practices from the Mediterranean region to the crossroads of African, Arab and Western cultures.
