This handbook provides a comprehensive and cutting edge survey of biobehavioral approaches to self-regulation and new insights into the processes determining human behavior. While traditional approaches to the study of human behavior tended to be mechanistic, modern perspectives have focused on the role of an active, agentic self. More recently, self-regulation research has emanated from social and personality psychology, with less emphasis on biological considerations. Nevertheless, a growing number of researchers have begun to address how self-regulation is implemented in the central and peripheral nervous systems. This research is important from a scientific perspective, by illuminating how self-regulation unfolds within the living tissue of our biological organism. Moreover, from an applied perspective, biological approaches can help to better understand and combat self-regulatory failure. The current volume aims to catalyze this development, by bringing biological approaches to the forefront of current self-regulation research and integrating the groundbreaking work from a range of perspectives.
