Rowet is a peaceful rural town, far from the bustling capital of Malone. But Mayor Snout has a dilemma: the town's defences are crumbling in disrepair, and with raiders and wargs roaming the wilds beyond the walls, a plan is needed. Two companions, happy-go-lucky jobber, Dukmar, and Gaffe the spell-bungling yemon, undertake the arduous trek to the capital to find a master builder willing to take on the job.
