This book provides a unique analysis of the changing circumstances of social inequality entrenched in education and how it has been reconfigured over time and place through a global ethnography of elite schools. These schools can be viewed as both individual institutions and as part of a wider educational, social, economic and political system. Elite schools around the world are positioned at the intersecting pinnacle of various scales, systems and regimes of social, cultural, political and economic power. They have much in common but are also diverse. As such, they invariably express both the experiential densities and diversities and the broader asymmetrical patterns of social life. They illustrate how various modalities of power are enjoyed and put to work and how educational and social inequalities are shaped and shifted. They, thus, speak to the social zeitgeist.
