A reading of the "illumination" passages in Milton'sParadise Lost will enable one to draw a sharpcontrast between the images of light and darkness.Milton sets these images to "assert the EternalProvidence / And to justify the ways of God to men"(I, 25-6) after the fall of the first parents inEden. By extension, the celestiallight and hellish darkness occur in postlapsarianGarden of Eden, but the sinful couple receives theillumination of "Eternal Providence" reaching aneverlasting and promised divine companionshipthrough the hope of a "paradise regained."
