The fortress of Burgos is one of the best preserved Napoleonic sites in the whole of Europe, and of its type is virtually unique, and was in fact laid down by no less a figure than the Emperor Napoleon himself. For a full month in the autumn of 1812, meanwhile, the 2,000-strong garrison defied the Duke of Wellington.
