Although small in size, two bronze bears from the Han Dynasty (202 BCE-220 CE) are important Asian artifacts in the collection of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. They have an immediate visual appeal; were originally used as weights to secure bamboo mats; and are creatures characteristic of the vivid menagerie that emerged in early Chinese art and literature. A 2006 exhibition of the bears and similar bronzes made it possible to hold a symposium to establish a broad perspective on the pervasive presence of animals in Chinese cosmology, funerary practices, and politics. Eugene Y. Wang, Roel Sterckx, and other experts consider such topics as: the migration of animal motifs from the steppes of Eurasia; the twelve animals in the Chinese calendar; the appearance of animals in funerary art; their rolesin communication with the supernatural.
