The emperor kept a personal diary, where he reflected on the concepts of duty, honor, conscience, loyalty and justice. The philosopher's work attracts modern readers with wise reasoning, imagery, surprisingly relevant recommendations. The emperor was an adherent of humanism and hated violence. Despite his highly moral views, Marcus Aurelius had to fight a lot. He participated in battles with the Parthians, Germans and Sarmatians. The emperor understood that wars weaken Rome, lead to the decline of cities and the impoverishment of the population. However, Marcus Aurelius did not believe in the possibility of improving the political system and solving problems peacefully.
