Die erste Ausgabe dieser Schrift erschien 1914 in englischer Sprache unter dem Titel Dr. Montessoris Own Handbook". Darin betont Maria Montessori in einer Vorbemerkung, dass diese Schrift das einzige authentische und von ihr autorisierte Handbuch der Montessori-Methode sei. Ziel des Buches ist eine knappe für die Umsetzung in die Praxis geeignete Darstellung ihrer pädagogischen Konzeption. Breiten Raum nimmt daher die Praxis der Montessori-Pädagogik mit ihren Übungen und Materialien ein. §Eine deutsche Übersetzung dieser Schrift erschien 1922 und erneut als zweite umgearbeitete Auflage 1928 unter dem Titel "Mein Handbuch - Grundsätze und Anwendung meiner neuen Methode der Selbsterziehung der Kinder".
