Das Buch kam im Exil-Verlag Allert de Lange in Amsterdam heraus und erlebte bereits 1935 eine zweite verbesserte Auflage. Dann gingen die schrecklichsten Ereignisse darüber hinweg. In einem kurzen Vorwort zur neuen Auflage 1956, die dieser Ausgabe zugrunde liegt, macht Brod darauf aufmerksam: Er musste einiges ändern nach der Vernichtung des deutschen Judentums.
