Die Entwicklung der Elektrolokomotiven der Baureihe 120 bis zur Serienreife dauerte rund zehn Jahre. Ihr Bau markiert einen Meilenstein in der Konstruktion elektrischer Lokomotiven, denn er bewirkte eine wahre Revolution in der Antriebstechnik: Von nun an wurde bei neuen Elektrolokomotiven fast nur noch die Drehstromtechnik verwendet. Ausgehend von der Technologie der Baureihe wurden Mitte der 1980er Jahre sogar die ersten ICE-Triebköpfe entwickelt. Karl-Gerhard Haas berichtet über Entwicklung, Bau und Geschichte dieser revolutionären Baureihe, deren Einsatzzeit bei der DB AG leider zu Ende geht.
