1895 hatte Heinrich Vogeler das Haus Barkenhoff in Worpswede erworben, in der Künstlerkolonie, in der sich Maler und Dichter der Zeit, Otto Modersohn, Paula Modersohn- Becker, Fritz Overbeck, Carl Hauptmann, Rainer Maria Rilke und andere, begegneten. Im Gründungsjahr der Insel 1899 erschienen zehn Radierungen Vogelers unter dem Titel An den Frühling, mit denen der Künstler, der später für den Insel Verlag zahlreiche Bücher illustrieren sollte, zuerst berühmt wurde. In zarten Grüntönen gehalten, fangen die Bilder die beglückende Stimmung des Frühlings ein, mit Genreszenen und Landschaftsporträts. Rilke hat Heinrich Vogeler und seine Kunst in einem poetischen Essay charakterisiert, der, neben Gedichten über den Frühling, diesem Band beigegeben wird.
