This book investigates the interlanguage behavior of Polish learners of English, focusing on the responses to the conventionally indirect speech of ambiguous invitation in a second language. The data are drawn from Discourse Completion Task surveys and semi-structured post-task interviews. Polish learners response behavior in Polish is compared with their response behavior in English and that of American native English speakers to reveal how Polish native speakers understand and reply to this speech act in different linguistic contexts. This study is anchored in the field of interlanguage pragmatics and draws on research from discourse analysis in the investigation of pragmatic competence. The findings will be of interest to researchers, educators, translators and those who wish to become aware of the value of cultural factors in communication, particularly if it takes place in a multi-cultural setting.
